China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) recently formed a standard-setting working group that includes industry giants such as Huawei, Tencent, Ant Group, and Baidu, as well as leading universities and institutions, to support the development of the metaverse.
The 60-person working group will be in charge of developing and amending industry standards for the metaverse, including research into application standards for manufacturing, communications, and digital humans. The group will also focus on talent development and help create international metaverse standards.
Liu Dingding, a tech industry expert, told the Global Times on Sunday that the working group, which includes key firms and institutions, will coordinate methods to improve the efficiency of the industry’s growth.
China’s attempts to promote the metaverse have accelerated after the MIIT released a three-year action plan in September. By 2025, the initiative aims to nurture three to five internationally prominent metaverse enterprises while also helping typical small and medium-sized businesses.
The strategy emphasizes the need of incorporating technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, cloud computing, and virtual reality into the metaverse. It also emphasized the importance of directing financial support toward the growth of the metaverse, as well as implementing tax and fee savings for relevant sectors.
The worldwide metaverse race is intensifying. Liu stated that, in comparison to Western countries, Chinese enterprises are more focused on practical applications and leveraging these technology to boost the actual economy.
